If you’re not a fan of the tune, this one is not going to change your mind, at all, as it’s filled to the brim with the usual Bob Weir heroics. I’ve included Looks Like Rain here because I like that song anyway, and this is a good 1990 version. That same dynamic plays out in The Other One, which is a fast charger. The best thing about Scarlet>Fire is getting to hear Jerry and new pianist Bruce Hornsby play around – there are so many little bits of playing where Jerry plays one thing and Bruce echos it in a slightly different way and vice versa. This tour took place in the wake of Brent Mydland’s death over the summer, and most of the band members have said on the record that their hearts really weren’t in it when they got to Europe, but none of that attitude shows tonight – this is an engaged and entertaining show, especially the Scarlet Begonias>Fire on the Mountain, Looks Like Rain that opens the second set and the Other One that comes after Space. We haven’t covered most of the Grateful Dead’s 1990 European tour on this site, so let’s try to remedy that tonight with this strong performance from Berlin.
